Athen is a performer, session player, composer and teacher. Classically trained from a young age and going on to study at Goldsmiths and the Guildhall, as well as undertaking Kodaly training and gaining a CT ABRSM, she has performed with a range of ensembles. She loves all sorts of music from medieval to minimalism, prog rock to pop, swing to ska.
Since 1996, her pupils have thrived in their lessons and given excellent feedback. Athen loves teaching children, teens and adults and tailors lessons to the individual – she aims to make learning accessible and build on what pupils can do. She is happy to guide pupils through the exam system if it is right for them, with exam results mostly merits and distinctions. She enjoys helping pupils explore standard or non-standard repertoire, use of technology and theory, as well as improvisation and composition.
